What You Can Do?

Many asthmatics think that asthma is just about relieving the symptoms. The danger lies in failing to address its root cause, which is inflammation of the airways. If asthma is not managed and controlled, it can become worse with every attack.

The best way to help avoid an asthma attack is to keep your asthma symptoms under control. Start by seeing your doctor to develop a treatment plan that is right for you.

Your doctor can help you control your asthma by prescribing the right medication for you but ultimately the responsibility is yours. Take an active role in asthma management by doing the following:

  • Talk to your doctor if your asthma is bothering you or preventing you from doing any normal activity. Tell your doctor if you notice you are using your reliever medicine more than usual. This is often a sign that your treatment plan needs to be reassessed. Visit your doctor once at least every six months.
  • Take your preventive asthma medications as indicated by your doctor.
  • Develop an action plan with your doctor to help you understand what to do everyday and in cases of emergency.
  • Avoid environmental triggers that can cause you to have asthma attacks.
  • Bring your inhaler to your next appointment or pharmacy and ask your doctor or pharmacist to check how well you are using the device.
