What Your Doctor Can Do?

With your doctor's help it is important for you to develop an Asthma Action Plan. Your plan should include instructions on how to take your daily preventer medication, the dose required frequency, and a plan for emergencies.

Remember that it is very important to follow your doctor's instructions even when you are not experiencing asthma symptoms. Your daily preventer medication works to help protect your lungs from asthma symptoms.

For severe attacks that require a trip to the emergency room you can expect the doctor to do the following:
  • Administer oxygen,
  • a bronchodilator via nebulization or
  • oral/intravenous steroids
  • Prescribe long-term inhalational anti-inflammatory treatment
  • Teach you how to manage acute attacks and how to use inhalers to ensure optimum benefit
  • Teach you how to use a peak flow meter to monitor your asthma
